ZAI is an architecture design studio based in Beijing, China. Founded in 2018, the name of the office comes from the Chinese character 在(zai). Zai in Chinese can both mean to exist in the present or be used to indicate the process of change. It is this duality that reflects the studio’s stance on architectural design. ZAI believes architecture first need to exist in the present, each design decision needs to respect the current physical, social and economic condition and be resolved with honesty and integrity . Architecture should also evolve, learning from lessons gained in the past and forming new solutions for the future.
Yihang Zhang grew up between Beijing, Canberra, and Sydney. He holds a bachelor of architecture degree from University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia. Prior to establishing ZAI in 2018 , Yihang worked in a variety of distinguished architectural offices throughout the world including Skidmore, Owings and Merill (SOM) in San Francisco, Kengo kuma and MAD in Beijing. He currently resides in Beijing.
